Positive Behaviour For Learning (PBL)

What is Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)?

Positive Behaviour for Learning is an evidence-based school-wide approach for behaviour, also known as PBL. This system teaches behavioural expectations, as part of a social learning curriculum across the whole school. PBL supports both academic and behavioural learning for all students, creating a positive school environment. A main focus of PBL is on the prevention of problem behaviours and teaching students more appropriate behaviours through clear expectations and consequences.

At Bexley North Public School we create a safe, positive, effective teaching and learning environments to enable all learners to achieve their personal best. Our students are explicitly taught how to achieve our 3 school rules of respectful, responsible and resilient behaviour across all areas of the school.

Why do we do PBL?

  • Students respond positively as they have been taught what is expected of them
  • Staff deliver consistent responses to student learning and behaviour
  • Students feel safe and cared for at school. Their parents, family and community are more involved in their school
  • Unproductive and challenging behaviour can be significantly reduced for most students.

How does PBL work?

  • Rules and expectations for behaviour are very clearly set out for each area of the school and will be visible, in the form of signs and symbols in classrooms and out in the grounds.
  • Staff members are consistent, meaning that processes for managing students who break school rules should be the same right across the school.
  • School-wide rules and expectations are taught explicitly in the classroom so that all students are aware of the rules across all areas of the school and that they understand what these rules actually mean
  • A PBL reward system is established where students receive rewards for when they are seen to be complying with the school rules and expectations.
